This Christmas as you’re gathering and celebrating with your family, remember to take just a brief moment to say a prayer and remember those who are going through tough times. And among those who are going through the toughest times are kids who have been diagnosed with cancer and their families.

The American Cancer Society is a non-profit organization whose mission is to save lives by investing in cancer research, educating and empowering people to avoid cancer or to detect it early, and helping people who are fighting against this terrible disease. They rely on donations to continue their important cause that affects so many of us.

Last year, United Airlines and the American Cancer Society teamed up for a pretty cool idea. For every donation of $50 or more (or 7500 United air miles which would be pooled together to help families stay together during cancer treatments), United arranged for a huggably soft, limited-edition 18-inch Gund teddy bear named “Kenny Hugyou” to be delivered to children in select hospitals around the country. The program was a hit: over $500,000 was raised, and thanks to the donations of many, 10,000 of these bears were given to children who could use the hug.

This year, they’re repeating the program, but this time the star is Kenny’s little blue-eyed sister “Maye I. Hugyou”, also a huggable, limited-edition 18-inch Gund teddy bear, who will be delivered to children.

And just like last year, if you donate $250 or more, United will also send you a second teddy bear to your home for you to to keep as a collectible or to give as a gift.

Childrens Art for Charity

Children's Art for CharityThis beautiful scarf you see is the work of Stephanie, Age 9. It’s one of many incredible gifts you’ll find at ChildrensArt.Org.

This is a site run by the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas.

It features all kinds of gifts, from scarves to ties to greeting cards and stationery to ornaments and collectibles. And the fantastic thing is, proceeds go directly to helping fund programs at the hospital. Over the 35 years of its existence, the Art project has helped to bring in over $24 million to fund programs that help cancer victims and their families.

And as you can see, some of the art these kids produce is amazing. This collection is a great way to show your support while sending a meaningful and beautiful gift.

Chocolates for a Cause

holiday chocolatesHere’s a great holiday gift idea from a site “Lesley’s Life Is Sweet”, which Lucy submitted a comment about last month.

This is a site that sells artisanal chocolates, where 20% of the proceeds go to charity. The item you see to the right is their box of holiday chocolates, where the proceeds will go to humanitarian organizations such as Heifer International, Kids Are Sweet International and the Cambodian Children’s Fund. If you look around the site, you’ll see other chocolates which can be donated to organizations like the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, America’s Second Harvest, the Heifer Foundation, and many more which you can choose from at checkout.

The founder, Leslie Byrne, is a truly inspirational person who in addition to founding the chocolate company has founded non-profit organizations to help impoverished children in Southeast Asia and Africa (Kids Are Sweet International),

The quality of the chocolates are top-notch. Lucy mentioned that this was the first all female company to get a USDA certified organic line…and that the chocolates were “absolutely delicious!!”

Stuffed Dog that drinks, burps, and wets!

Great Gift for Dog Lovers and anyone thinking of getting a dog.

Back in October, I was happy to receive a comment on the “About Us” page of this blog from Debbie Eades, the author of EVERY RESCUED DOG HAS A TALE: Stories from the Dog Rescue Railroad. It’s both a heartbreaking and heartwarming story about dogs on death row who are saved by the “Dog Rescue Railroad”, a network of wonderful volunteers who help dogs who have been abused and abandoned find loving homes. And ALL PROFITS go directly to help rural animal shelters and dog rescues around the country to ensure that more dogs will have a happy ending.

A book like this is especially important around Christmas time, because this is the time of year when many well-meaning parents will buy their children a dog. They become excited about the companionship and the fun times they’ll have playing with the dog. But sadly, too often they don’t think about the responsibility of owning a dog, and they decide the dog “doesn’t work out”, whether it’s because the dog is in a house where the kids are too young, or the dog has habits that the family doesn’t like, or the family simply doesn’t want to take the responsbility of feeding, walking, and getting medical treatment for the dog.

And so tragically, too many of these wonderful dogs get thrown out like an old sweater, ending up in shelters and ultimately euthanized. Ms. Eades book is a great gift for any animal lover, and should be required reading for anyone who’s thinking of buying a dog. It is also a great way to teach a child of the realities of Man’s Best Friend in the world, and that dog ownership is not simply owning another toy, it’s taking responsibility and care for one of God’s creatures–one that lives, breathes, feels love, and feels pain.
