Original Textbook Used in the early United States – The New England Primer

April 7th, 2010 · Amazon

From the 1700s to the early 1900s,  the New England Primer was the textbook used in all schools around the United States. It’s the textbook that many of our founding fathers learned how to read from.

This is a great reproduction of this book. It looks and reads exactly as it did in 1777.

WallBuilders is a neat 501(c)(3) organization which has an astounding library of many first edition books from the nation’s founders. There is no place where you can get a more accurate reproduction of the original Declaration of Independence or the original Constitution and Bill of Rights, not to mention reprints of many historical books. In a world where modern historians seem to have a penchant of rewriting history to suit their contemporary audience, it’s neat to go back to the original sources and learn what life was really like.

Soap that raises money for landmine removal and support

April 4th, 2010 · Developing Areas, Uncommon Goods

After years of being devastated by war, hidden and unexploded land mines continue to be a danger in Cambodia, continuing to harm innocent men, women and children.

These unique soaps were designed to bring awareness to this continuing scourge, as well as to raise money for landmine removal and help for survivors. For each soap sold, $2 is donated to The Cambodia Landmine Museum, which houses a school and an orphanage for up to 30 at-risk children.

The goal is cleverly in the shape of a landmine; the metaphor is that as the soap disappears, so do the landmines. The soap is available in Rosemary Mint or Coconut, is made from all-natural ingredients and is never tested on animals. Landmine Soap is available at Uncommon Goods.

Philosophy Shower Gel, Shampoo, Bubble Bath that supports the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation

March 20th, 2010 · Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, Nordstrom

icon
iconphilosophy inner graceicon is an amazingly refreshing shower gel which can also be used as a shampoo or a bubble bath. It has a lightly scented smell and produces luxurious silky bubbles.

As with many products from philosophy, it’s a well produced product whose feel and the smell can turn your shower into a calm and tranquil experience.

The product is dedicated to Dana Reeve, the amazing woman who stood by actor Christopher Reeve through his paralysis and his untimely death, and then herself succumbed to lung cancer at the young age of 44.

The poem on the front of the bottle pays tribute to her.

She has a face of light
and is the calm within the depth of any storm
gentle stranger, earth angel
without ego or expectation
only dreams and hopes for those she loves
and she loves many…
but many more love and adore her
when our hope is lost, it is her smile,
her indifference to all fear and chaos
that opens each of us to the greatest love of all.
her love and legacy teaches us only
what we should give, not what we can take.
her inner grace is our light in the dark,
her flame is eternal

dana reeve
1961-2006

100% of philosophy’s profit from this product will go to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.

Auction of Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon Trial Evidence on eBay for Charity

March 11th, 2010 · Uncategorized

Disclosure: We participate in the eBay Partner Network (EPN) meaning we may earn a commission when users click on links to eBay and make purchases.

It’s sad to hear all the stories of political corruption these days. But in Baltimore, the Maryland State Prosecutor’s office has done something very clever as far as turning something negative into something very positive.

For those of you who may not have been following local Baltimore politics, Mayor Sheila Dixon has been in a lot of hot water of late. She was investigated and indicted on various charges of misappropriation, theft, bribery, and perjury. Among other things, the evidence showed that she took gift cards which were intended to be given to the poor, and used them to buy herself a camcorder and an Xbox. She also accepted what appeared to be a bribe of gift cards of purchase expensive furs.

In 2009, a jury returned a “guilty” verdict on one misdemeanor count of fraudulent misappropriation, and she pleaded guilty to a count of perjury. As part of a plea agreement between her and the state prosecutor, she agreed to resign as mayor, to perform 500 hours of community service at Our Daily Bread, and to pay a donation of $45,000 to the Bea Gaddy Family Center or an HIV/AIDS charity. In return, she would avoid prison time, would remain eligible for a state pension, and would even be able to have the criminal charges expunged from her record after a probationary period. You can view a PDF of the plea agreement here.

One of the more fascinating parts of the plea agreement was that Dixon would agree to have the evidence used in the trial auctioned off by the state prosecutor’s office on eBay, with all proceeds going to benefit Youthworks of Baltimore, which provides summer jobs for Baltimore City public school students. It was a clever move by the Prosecutor’s Office to put some positive public relations spin on an otherwise sad situation. I notice that the prosecutor’s office knows its way around eBay, even springing for the extra 75 cents to put a headline under the listing. 😉

The auction runs until Wednesday, March 17.  The prosecutor has even said that he’ll throw in the bright red “evidence” tape that was used during the trial. 🙂

Here are links to the actual auctions.

$6000 Burnt Umber Mink Coat from Paris

$3000 Nepal Persian Lamb Fur Coat

Xbox

Samsung Video Camera

Here’s hoping these go for a lot of money given their historical value, and that this unfortunate incident can turn into good for some of Baltimore’s neediest. And even if you don’t win the auction, do consider clicking on one of those charities’ links to give them a little something.
