The Gratitude Book – What are You Thankful for in 2011?

December 31st, 2010 · Amazon

Happy New Year!

One of the things that I’ve noticed as the years go by is that we don’t give thanks as much as we used to. Our society has become one where everyone feels entitled to what’s “coming to them”. We forget that every day, and every breath, is a gift to us. And when that happens, we forget how important it is to cherish everything and to thank those who have touched our lives.

The Gratitude Book Project: Celebrating 365 Days of Gratitude is a remarkable book where editor Donna Kozik gave 365 authors an assignment: write in 200 words or less what YOU are thankful for. The compilation is a wonderful one with thanks that range from one writer being thankful for the person who saved his life, to another writer who’s thankful for red chairs and carrot cake.

A portion of all proceeds from Amazon book sales goes to FeedAmerica, the ASPCA, Make a Wish Foundation and Women for Women International.

So what am I thankful for, in 200 words or less? Well, let’s see.

I thank God for giving me life and health and happiness and everything in between. I’m thankful that the wonderful Lisa is now in my life, and for my brother and sister and my friends who have always stood by me, accepted me and loved me for who I am. I’m thankful for having a nice job, for first snowfalls, for autumn leaves, and for mountain views after long hikes.  I’m thankful for all those in the world who do good for others who are less fortunate than they, including all the charities you see to your right. I’m thankful for wonderful parents who loved me more than anything, taught me well and whom I hope I am honoring the memory of in my life today. I’m thankful for childrens’ giggles and smiles from strangers I never knew. I’m thankful for Peter Luger’s steaks and fresh sushi and sweet grapes and watermelons. And—I’m not just saying this to suck up to you J— I’m thankful for YOU, that there are still those in the world who care enough to be looking at silly little sites like mine for ideas on how you can help others.

So what are you most thankful for? Leave a comment on this post (it can be anonymous). Trust me, it’s a very good exercise to do 🙂

Have a wonderful New Year!

Mario Batali Lunch Box

December 28th, 2010 · Children's Charities, World Hunger

Remember the old days when you wanted to be the kid in elementary school with the coolest lunch box? You can relive those days when you arrive to work with your very own Mario Batali Ditali Commuter Bag Insulated Lunch Tote.

This is a fashionable “lunch box” which you can bring to your workplace every day. Aside from saving money and being good to the environment by not wasting brown bags, this stylish bag will keep your homemade lunch fresh and tasty. It’s made of high density nylon which is extremely durable. It has two compartments, one which is not insulated (to carry utensils and non-perishable items) and one which is insulated to keep your food warm (or cold). The bag even has organizer pockets for you to put things like cell phones or PDAs, as well as an adjustable shoulder strap.

Some of the proceeds will go to The Lunch Box Auction Fund, a cause Mario Batali supports to feed children-in-need and give them opportunities to learn and grow.

The Best Last Minute Christmas Gift for 2010 – TisBest Gift Cards

December 22nd, 2010 · TisBest

TisBest charitable gift cardOh oh. It’s three days to Christmas and you haven’t found anything for that special someone in your life. What to do?

You could go for a last minute gift sent from a company like 1-800-FLOWERS.COM or FTD.com, but as someone who’s worked in the florist industry before, your chances of getting a gift that will “wow” them is about 50-50 (florists often close early before Christmas and/or they run out of supplies to make the best arrangements).

You could send an email gift card from Amazon. But let’s face it, you might as well write “Sorry I put your gift off to the last second. Happy Holidays!”

No, the best last minute gift I can think of are TisBest Charity Gift Cards.

Buying a Gift Card

The concept behind TisBest is simple. You give a gift card of any amount you choose (either a physical gift card that’s mailed or, if you want them to get it before Christmas, a gift card you can print on your printer or email to your receipient). But instead of your gift being used to buy another to add to the pile of Christmas gifts they’ve gotten, it goes to help charities in need.

And charities are in need more than ever these days. Whenever the economy turns south as it has recently, charitable giving tends to suffer as people hunker down and limit their spending.  This has happened to charities this year, and they’re hurting. Americans are a giving people. It’s easy to give out of abundance. But when times are tough, that’s when giving really counts the most (the widow’s mite comes to mind).

The experience your recipient has with TisBest cards (whether you’re giving to an individual or to a group of people) is far, far superior to the old system where you’d write “A donation has been made in your name to such-and-such charity” because it puts the recipient in charge.   Instead of passively reading your card and throwing it into the trash, with a TisBest charity gift card they can go to a Web site and apply your donation to up to three charities which mean a lot to them, whether they have a loved one suffering from an illness or have a particular cause which they are passionate about.

Your Recipient’s Experience Redeeming the Gift Card

Once your recipient gets the gift card, they can go to the TisBest site and enter the gift code:

TisBest charity gift card code

On the next screen, they’ll be able to choose from a number of well-known charities in these areas:

– Animal Causes
– Art and Culture
– Building Community
– Children
– Disabilities
– Education
– Environment
– Faith Based
– Health
– Homelessness
– Human Rights
– Humanitarian
– Hunger
– Peace & Non-Violence
– Senior Citizens
– Sports & Recreation
– Women’s Issues

The site is easy and fun to use, and your recipient will definitely be able to find many charities they’d love to support. And having gone through this myself, it’s definitely a wonderful and heartwarming experience to go through the list of charities and decide where the donation should go to (your recipient can choose up to three, and the amount will be allocated across all three). There are a few charities which I would have liked to see (namely, the Lupus Foundation and the American Liver Foundation), but even so, there are definitely plenty to choose from.

TisBest Charity Gift Card - Selecting a Charity

On the next screen, your recipient can optionally write a note back to you which will tell you which charities they donated to.

thank you note

On the last screen, your recipient can optionally submit their email addresses to the organizations to be thanked personally by them.

TisBest Charity Gift Card - Last Page

That’s it. It was literally one of the most pleasant Web site experiences I’ve had.

TisBest reports that this year, Americans will spend $510 on Christmas gifts. There’ll be the usual gifts, sweaters and ties, iPods and Kindles, gift baskets and toys. But TisBest issued a challenge–what if we were to take just 10% of that, $51, and help out a charity? The money we spend would last much longer than any of those other presents, as would the great feeling of helping those who are less fortunate than us.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Make a Kiva Microloan with a Groupon discount!

December 19th, 2010 · Developing Areas

For a limited time, Groupon is partnering with Kiva to offer Groupon-like discounts for microloans you give to entrepreneurs around the world. Specifically, for every $15 you donate, Groupon will add on another $10 to give you a total credit of $25, which you can donate to Kiva projects yourself or give to someone as a gift.

If you haven’t heard of Groupon, where have you been? 🙂 It’s the most popular local-deal site in the world. If you don’t have an account with them yet, you can sign up here (after you sign up, you’ll see links to the Kiva deal on the top and the lower right of the page).

If you haven’t heard of Kiva, it’s a great non-profit organization which helps you help people in poverty-striken areas around the world.

It’s not just a handout, though. Kiva takes money which you loan and works with microfinance institutions around the world, who in turn lend it to entrepreneurs in the poor areas who wish to start a business. Just a little money from you can help them change their lives and the lives of the people around them.

On Kiva’s site, you can read about the projects around the world that need funding. You can choose projects by gender, type of project, and whether it’s a group or an individual requesting funding. Each project has a very detailed description from the entrepreneur and statistics of what the entrepreneur does with the money.

The entrepreneurs are very carefully screened by Kiva and the microfinance institutions, so in the vast majority of cases (over 98%), the entrepreneur is able to pay the money back, and then it goes back to your account (which you can loan to another business, withdraw, or donate to Kiva). You don’t earn interest on the money, but the knowledge that your pocket change can change someone’s life is worth much more than that.

Your loans to entrepreneurs are not tax-deductible, although direct donations to Kiva are.

Hurry! $200 of Software for $19 at AppSumo today!

December 17th, 2010 · Charity:Water, Developing Areas, Uncategorized

groupon for softwareI had the pleasure of chatting with Noah at AppSumo today. If you haven’t heard of it, the best way to describe it is it’s like “Groupon for Software”. Each day, they offer a bundle of great software at an incredible price.

Today, they have an extra-special deal. For $19, you not only get $200 of software (and people really do pay that much for this caliber of software every day), 40% of the price also goes to Charity:Water, a fantastic organization which builds wells and provides fresh water to developing areas around the world. In today’s world, people die every day of water-borne diseases and illnesses, so what AppSumo (and you and I) do for them is critical.

Here’s the software you get in this bundle. Hurry, it’s only available for a few more hours, so get yours now!

PlayOn: This is a pretty cool program that lets you watch streaming Internet video on your TV (or even on your iPhone or iPad). Just install the software on a PC connected to the Internet, and you’ll be able to watch shows on your TV via a Wii, Xbox, PS3 which is also  connected to the Internet (or even an iPhone or iPad). I’ll be using it to watch new episodes of Conan on TBS 🙂 It’s a $20 value, which I believe gives you a full year of service.

Plants vs. Zombies: A ridiculously fun game from PopCap games that’s received huge accolades from critics. Retail value $20.

Dial2Do: a cool program for your phone that recognizes your voice and lets you do things like check email, send text messages, and post to Twitter all with your voice. The way it works, you dial a local phone number, say what you want to do, and hang up. Dial2Do will figure out what you want to do and do it! You gotta try it to believe it. Retail value of $25 for one year of service.

BatteryBar Pro: If you’re like me, you’re sick and tired of the Windows battery bar being so danged inaccurate. BatteryBar Pro touts itself as “the most accurate battery meter” giving you much more and much more reliable information about your battery. Retail value $10.

WinXDVD Ripper: This is software that lets you rip the contents of a DVD to video files on your hard drive. Retail value $40.

Defense Grid: The Awakening: A tower defense game that has had rave reviews. Retail value $10.

The Complete Android Guide: This is an “everything you wanted to know about Android” PDF guide. After skimming through it, most of the information is pretty basic. But still, a good read for the Android newbie. Retail value $10.

Boomerang: Here’s an interesting service which they describe as a “Snooze button for Outlook”. It lets you designate messages in your Outlook inbox to be moved out of your box (onto their service) and then “boomeranged” back to you at the right time. Not for everyone, but if your Inbox is filled with hundreds of items, you might want to consider it. Retail value $15.

Panda Cloud Antivirus Pro: If you don’t have virus protection on your PC, you absolutely need this. Much more economical that higher priced companies like McAfee. Retail value $30.

Emsisoft Online Armor Firewall: I consider myself a computer expert, and even MY computer was attacked by spyware last year without me realizing. This software will help you prevent that. Retail value $40.

War Songs from the 1920s and 1930s.

December 7th, 2010 · Amazon

Most of us are familiar with war songs composed  during World War II and Vietnam. But Bloody War: Songs 1924-1939 is a fascinating collection that looks into war songs that were popular after the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I.

A portion of all proceeds from the sale of this album will be donated to Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA.org). On this, the 69th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, it’s fascinating to see how that “day that will live in infamy” ended up affecting the whole world, including the songs that are sung during war.
