Kohl's Cares for Kids Sale on Dr. Seuss Books

May 12th, 2010 · Uncategorized

dr seuss books at KohlsHurry and grab this one while it lasts!

Kohl’s is having a clearance on Dr. Seuss books, including The Foot Book, Oh the Things You Can Think, If I Ran the Circus, and the book that caused a lot of us to “go green” before going green became a political thing: The Lorax.

Note that even though a stuffed animal is pictured, the clearance sale doesn’t include the stuffed animal.

Even without a clearance sale, there are great deals to be had by visiting the Kohls Cares for Kids Collection, including Toy Story plush toys, a country music album, and one book I’m tempted to get–Top Secret Restaurant Recipes–all for $5.

Kohl’s Cares for Kids donates 100% of the net profits from sales of these products to children’s health and education initiatives.

Betty White's charity: Show your appreciation by supporting the Morris Animal Foundation!

May 9th, 2010 · Animal Causes

It’s been years since I’ve watched an episode of Saturday Night Live all the way through and laughed harder at the last sketch than at the first. Last night’s SNL with Betty White changed all that with the Mother’s Day 2010 episode of SNL. 500,000 Facebook and Twitter users lobbied to get her as a host, and they got this one right. I’m seeing thousands of tweets a minute coming in, all saying what a great show it was. Congratulations to Betty White, Lorne Michaels, and the returning cast members Ana Gasteyer, Molly Shannon, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Maya Rudoph for a great episode.

One great way to show your appreciation to Ms. White for her great legacy of work, from Password to the Mary Tyler Moore Show to The Golden Girls to Boston Legal to yesterday’s Saturday Night Live, is by donating to the charity of whom she is President Emerita and a Trustee: The Morris Animal Foundation. This is a top-rated charity that is the world’s largest nonprofit foundation 501(c)(3) dedicated to research studies to protect, treat and cure animals around the world. Mama, Won’t You Play With Me? is a children’s book by Meg Walsh about a baby duckling whose mother can’t play with him because she has a broken wing. The duckling visits other animal mothers to play with, but at the end of the day is still sad. Coming home, he is happy when his mother hugs him and tells him she loves him.

It’s a great book to read with a child who has a mother with a disability to help them understand how precious a mother’s love is.

Beautiful Turtle Night Light that Helps Turtles

April 28th, 2010 · Animal Causes, Uncommon Goods

This Recycled Glass Turtle Night Light, available from Uncommon Goods, is beautiful and also goes to help endangered leatherback turtles.

The design of the night light was inspired by the journey of a baby sea turtle from its nest on the sand to the sea. It’s environmentally friendly, made from recycled glass bottles before they hit the landfill. The artistry is astounding; the piece is kiln formed and sparkles from all angles.

Each light comes with a 3 1/2″ x 5″ reproduction of the original watercolor by artist Elaine Hayes-Gray that inspired it, along with her poem “Follow the Moon”.

For every light sold, the artists will donate a portion of proceeds to the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation to help Leatherback turtles.

Earth Day 2010 Sale from Novica

April 22nd, 2010 · Uncategorized

To celebrate Earth Day 2010, Novica is having a sale letting you take 10% off all eco-friendly gifts!.

If you don’t know what Novica is, it’s an organization that, in association with National Geographic, sells hand-crafted gifts created from developing areas all over the world. In a world where more and more things are produced with machines or mass produced with cheap labor (on most trips lately, I am shocked to find out that 90% of the souvenirs in any given area are made in China!), it’s a breath of fresh air to get handmade items from artisans in the actual areas where the art originated.

And of course, Novica helps people in developing areas make a living for themselves, their families, and their communities.

With this sale, Novica is featuring sustainable, natural, recycled, or reclaimed items. Every gift not only has a story, it helps the planet.

Click to the site and read all about the artists, the areas, the art, and the eco-friendliness.

Blue Sky by Emily West and Rain is a Good Thing by Luke Bryan, as seen on Celebrity Apprentice

April 18th, 2010 · Uncategorized

On yesterday’s Celebrity Apprentice, the task for the celebrities was to makeover budding country artists Luke Bryan and Emily West. Corporate sponsors with new products to hock usually sign up to have their products improved, but of course in reality, the exposure their brand gets by being on national television usually far surpasses the benefits of whatever the apprentices do.

The same was true in yesterday’s case, but instead of marketing color printers or software, the product was two up-and-coming country singers, Luke Bryan and Emily West. Both are amazing young talents who definitely deserved to be featured on national TV. Their exposure was hardly American Idol numbers, but still, hopefully this could be the big break they needed to get widespread attention. Portions of their singles were shown on the show. Bryan’s song was a catchy, peppy country song, while West’s ballad was a moving song that had the audience in tears.

For the next month, if you purchase  the singles of either of these artists on iTunes, a portion of proceeds will be donated to Cyndi Lauper’s (the winning project manager’s) charity:

Luke Bryan – Rain Is a Good Thing (Live from Celebrity Apprentice)

Emily West – Blue Sky (Live from Celebrity Apprentice)
