It consists of full sizes of Lancome’s “Color Fever Gloss” for lips and “Le Vernis Nail Laquer” for nails, both in matching colors. You can choose from three shades:  Mademoiselle Grape, Bon Bon Strawberry, and Ma Cherie Cherry (which I’m guessing is purple, red, and pink).

Auction of Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon Trial Evidence on eBay for Charity

March 11th, 2010 · Uncategorized

Disclosure: We participate in the eBay Partner Network (EPN) meaning we may earn a commission when users click on links to eBay and make purchases.

It’s sad to hear all the stories of political corruption these days. But in Baltimore, the Maryland State Prosecutor’s office has done something very clever as far as turning something negative into something very positive.

For those of you who may not have been following local Baltimore politics, Mayor Sheila Dixon has been in a lot of hot water of late. She was investigated and indicted on various charges of misappropriation, theft, bribery, and perjury. Among other things, the evidence showed that she took gift cards which were intended to be given to the poor, and used them to buy herself a camcorder and an Xbox. She also accepted what appeared to be a bribe of gift cards of purchase expensive furs.

In 2009, a jury returned a “guilty” verdict on one misdemeanor count of fraudulent misappropriation, and she pleaded guilty to a count of perjury. As part of a plea agreement between her and the state prosecutor, she agreed to resign as mayor, to perform 500 hours of community service at Our Daily Bread, and to pay a donation of $45,000 to the Bea Gaddy Family Center or an HIV/AIDS charity. In return, she would avoid prison time, would remain eligible for a state pension, and would even be able to have the criminal charges expunged from her record after a probationary period. You can view a PDF of the plea agreement here.

One of the more fascinating parts of the plea agreement was that Dixon would agree to have the evidence used in the trial auctioned off by the state prosecutor’s office on eBay, with all proceeds going to benefit Youthworks of Baltimore, which provides summer jobs for Baltimore City public school students. It was a clever move by the Prosecutor’s Office to put some positive public relations spin on an otherwise sad situation. I notice that the prosecutor’s office knows its way around eBay, even springing for the extra 75 cents to put a headline under the listing. 😉

The auction runs until Wednesday, March 17.  The prosecutor has even said that he’ll throw in the bright red “evidence” tape that was used during the trial. 🙂

Here are links to the actual auctions.

$6000 Burnt Umber Mink Coat from Paris

$3000 Nepal Persian Lamb Fur Coat

Xbox

Samsung Video Camera

Here’s hoping these go for a lot of money given their historical value, and that this unfortunate incident can turn into good for some of Baltimore’s neediest. And even if you don’t win the auction, do consider clicking on one of those charities’ links to give them a little something.

Fiji Water Home Delivery Discount Coupon Code / Promotional Code

March 5th, 2010 · Developing Areas

Fiji Water Home Delivery Discount

I started drinking Fiji Water a few years ago. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one of those snooty celebrity water snobs. I just happen to like the clear, clean taste of their water more than tap water or bottled water like Aquafina which is basically filtered tap water. There’s also something pretty cool about drinking water that came from an island in the South Pacific. Just as exotic as water from the French Alps, and much more exotic than a spring in Maine The back of the square bottle talks about how rainwater in Fiji filters through volcanic rock and collects into a pristine aquifer to provide the source of the water. I’m not sure how true that all is, but it works for me.

Companies that sell water make a huge profit margin, of course. After all, they’re selling water! But one nice thing about about Fiji Water is that they do give back to their community. They provide clean water access to a number of villages around their water source, and partnered with the Rotary Club to fund Pacific Water for Life, which helps provide infrastructure, expertise and skills to deliver clean water to 100 more communities. They also employ and provide training and education to over 300 Fijians. They also founded the Fiji Water Foundation which focuses on education, infrastructure, and health and sanition in Fiji, and support a number of charities in North America.

Fiji Water isn’t a non-profit organization, not by a longshot. But it is nice to see a corporation giving back to the extent that it does.

While Fiji Water is ridiculously expensive when you purchase it in a store, you can have Fiji Water delivered to your home for about $1.15 a bottle when you order an annual subscription at shopfijiwater.com and enter code LS30 in the field that says Coupon Code / Promotional Code (optional). This will give you 30% off the price, with free shipping. It sure beats having huge backbreaking jugs of Poland Spring delivered every month. 🙂

Lego Set of Fallingwater by Frank Lloyd Wright

March 2nd, 2010 · Barnes and Noble

UPDATE: As of 8/28/10, Amazon.Com now sells the LEGO Architecture Fallingwater set for only $69.95! No better time than now to get this set which will one day become a collector’s item.

lego fallingwater set
While visiting Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin desert home in Scottsdale, Arizona a few days ago, I came across this in the gift shop. It is Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Fallingwater”. Bar none, it’s one of the absolute coolest Lego sets you’ll find anywhere.

The first thing to know is that the kit is not for kids. No bright primary colors, pirates or Jedi knights here. Instead, you’ll find a Lego set that serves as a tribute to the nuances of the great work of architecture and as a nod to the great architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

It’s great for architecture buffs and grown-ups who grew up loving Lego as kids. Putting together the set will not only bring back the fun of building Lego as a kid, it also serves as great insight to the architecture of Fallingwater (the set was designed by an architect), and also produces a fine work of art suitable for display in any home library or living room.

If sets like Lego’s Statue of Liberty are any indication, this set will have a short run, and then will skyrocket in value.

The lowest price I could find for this set is at Barnes and Noble. Lego has paid a licensing fee to the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, so purchasing this set will help support that fine organization. But to maximize your contribution, you can go online and purchase this set at the official Fallingwater museum store.
