Stuffed Animals that Benefit Charity

December 3rd, 2008 · Family Christian Stores

2008 Adopt-a-Lamb - James Fund2008 Barnabas Bear - James Fund

These two cute little fellows, the 2008 Adopt-a-Lamb and the 2008 Barnabas Bear are being sold by Family Christian Stores. But hurry–every year they sell out very quickly.

When you purchase the lamb or the bear, a portion of proceeds will go to the James Fund, a non-profit foundation that helps orphans and widows around the world, following the words of the apostle James: “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress”.

Getting these stuffed animals for the child or children in your life will do two things: giving them a cute stuffed animal and also teaching them and helping them always remember a valuable lesson about caring for those who are not as fortunate as they are.

We Are Happy To Serve You Greek Coffee Cup Purse or Ceramic Replica

December 2nd, 2008 · Uncommon Goods

Anyone who’s spent time in New York City can recognize these coffee cups. They’re the distinctive blue cups with “We Are Happy To Serve You” in gold faux Greek lettering, once a staple at every corner deli, but sadly quickly disappearing as more and more Starbucks and McDonalds take over the scene.

But you can preserve the memory of these cups for the New Yorker or ex-New Yorker in your life with these great products.

greek coffee cup purseWishingFish has the “Lucky Beggar” purse, a reproduction of the coffee cup reproduced as a leather coin purse with a sturdy zipper. This purse was the work of New York artist George Skelcher, who created the purse after seeing the city’s homeless use crushed coffee cups to panhandle for change. It’s for this reason that part of the proceeds of each purse is donated to HELP USA, an organization that’s been helping the homeless since 1986.

New York Greek Coffee CupUnCommonGoods also has a replica of the famous New York Greek Coffee Cup, except this one is made of ceramic (bagel sandwich not included). So even as these cups become harder and harder to find in the City, you can rest assured that this one will last for a long, long time. As with all gifts you buy at UnCommonGoods, you can specify after Checkout for $1 of your purchase price to go to Americares, Craft Emergency Relief Fund, Defenders of Wildlife, or Comprehensive Development, Inc.

The FEED Bag

November 25th, 2008 · Amazon

Gap Feed Usa Canvas ToteNEW for 2011! While the original FEED Bag is no longer available from Amazon.com, you can get a much, much more stylish and comfortable Blue Denim Bucket Tote or White Canvas Tote from the Gap.
Last year on Thanksgiving we highlighted the FEED Bag, a brilliant product introduced last year intended to fight two desperate needs at once: world hunger and the environment.

So this year, once again this will be the product we’ll be showcasing as Thanksgiving approaches. The World Food Programme Feed Bag.

Reusable shopping bags are everywhere these days. And they’re great. Every time you use a reusable shopping bag, you eliminate one plastic bag that goes into a landfill or the ocean or into the ecosystem (there was an astounding report earlier this year that reported that the world’s oceans contain many times more plastic than plankton).

But unlike most companies selling charity shopping bags, where all proceeds goes as profit to the company selling it, this bag has an added bonus. A percentage of proceeds goes directly to the World Food Programme, an international relief agency supported both by individual contributions and contributions by world governments. Last year it distributed 4 million metric tons of food to 87.8 million people in 78 countries and provided relief in many of the most critical parts of the globe.

Perhaps more important than the actual money that’s donated is what you’ll be doing. Aside from helping the environment, it’ll be a way for you to help build awareness among your friends and fellow shoppers of this important cause. When a friend sees you with this bag in the supermarket with its distinctive “FEED” logo, it’ll start a conversation. World hunger is a horrific problem that we in the United States take far too much for granted–just look at all the food that’s routinely thrown out in garbage cans and street corners. Parents have gotten out of the habit of reminding their kids to “think of all the starving people in Africa”. Yet there are more now than ever. By using this bag in public, you bring awareness to the cause.

This Thanksgiving, as you enjoy your Thanksgiving feast and give thanks to God for your health, your prosperity, and the love of your family, let’s be sure to remember those in need. Here are some organizations you can donate to directly:

Set of Glasses that Helps Wildlife Conservation

November 19th, 2008 · Conservation, Uncommon Goods

UncommonGoods is a great gift company that has some of the most creative and meaningful gifts on the Web. This set of four classes falls into that category.

The Protect Our Wildlife Glasses – Set of 4 is the fourth in a set of special glasses that Uncommon Goods sells. As with all the glasses in the set, they’re amazingly made from the bottom of old wine bottles that otherwise would have been taking up landfills or polluting waterways in North America. Instead, they’ve been formed into these great looking glasses, each silkscreened (in environmentally friendly ways) with the images of four different endangered species: the lemur, the giant panda, the tiger and the sea turtle. Each glass has writing on it that says “Save Our Wildlife” in English, Spanish, Afrikaans/South African and French.

$2 from each set will go to Defenders of Wildlife, which is dedicated to the preservation of all wild animals and native plants in their natural community.

Best Kitchen Scale that helps fight Juvenile Diabetes

November 13th, 2008 · Amazon, Juvenile Diabetes

best kitchen scale that calculates nutritional valueThis Weight of Life scale is no ordinary kitchen scale. Like other scales, it’ll perform weight calculations in grams, ounces, pounds, and volume for liquids. A function even will calculate sauces or liquid items while factoring out the weight of their containers. The glass scale on top is dishwasher-safe.

A special bonus feature of this scale is that it helps calculate the nutritional value of food, including bread equivalent, calories, calories from fat, carbohydrates, protein, fat, saturated fat, fiber, sugars, cholesterol, and sodium. It includes data for up to 1,000 common foods and tracks daily meals for up to 4 family members. By using the scale, home cooks can become educated on the nutritional value of different food, and start to make great choices about ingredients and portion sizes. Users can also manually type in values from pre-packaged and restaurant meals to find out if they meet or exceed daily portion totals. It’s great for dieters, athletes, diabetics, and others who want to learn how to cook healthy.

A portion of the proceeds from each sale are donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Piri Piri / Peri Peri / Peli Peli Cooking Sauce

November 10th, 2008 · Amazon

peri periNo matter how you spell it, here’s a delicious treat for all you cooks out there.

Nando’s is the name of a famous Portuguese chicken restaurant chain (it actually originated in South Africa) which now has 700 restaurants all over Africa, Europe, Australia and Canada.

Nando’s Peri-Peri Pepper Sauce is the chain’s signature sauce, based on the Piri Piri chili pepper (the word is Swahili for “birds eye”, because the pepper is that small).  The sauce is spicy yet tremendously flavorful, with a tantalizing mix of lemon, herbs, and spices. In parts of Portugal and Africa, it has become as popular as ketchup. It’s won many awards for its flavor and spiciness.

The cooking sauce can be used as a marinade for chicken, vegetables, and fish, and even contains high levels of Vitamin C and is a source for Vitamin A, B1, B3, and B12, as well as minerals. You might also enjoy the world famous Hot Peri-Peri Sauce

It’s probably going to be a while before a Nando’s will open in the United States, but you can get a taste (literally) by buying their signature sauce at Amazon. And a portion of all proceeds go to help buy mosquito nets to help prevent malaria in Africa!

Spider Monkey Stuffed Animal

November 7th, 2008 · Conservation, Nordstrom

iconiconThis is a great stuffed animal that is as well-made as it is educational. ‘Telinho’ the White-Whiskered Spider Monkeyicon represents an actual species of monkey who lives in Cristalino State Park in the Brazilian Amazon. Origins has created this very detailed plush animal which makes both a great gift and teaches a fantastic lesson on conservation and taking care of the environment.

White-whiskered spider monkeys are amazing acrobats, swinging from tree to tree and rarely coming down to the ground. They have powerful tails, and feed, play and social with other monkeys in their groups.

Sadly, the forests where spider monkeys live are being ravaged by cattle ranching and illegal logging, so there are only a few thousand remaining on the earth. Local citizens of Brazil are working diligently to protect these vital natural areas, but they need our help.

By buying Telinho, you can do a part to save the white-whiskered spider monkeys and other wildlife in Brazilian forests. Origins will donate $3 from every Telinho sold to UK Charity Fauna & Flora International and its partner the Cristalino Ecological Foundation. Perhaps more importantly, you can tell kids and grown-ups alike the story of Telinho and inspire them to join in the struggle to save the forests.
