Portable Water Dish and Leash: A Great Gift for the Dog

January 19th, 2010 · Animal Causes

portable water dishYou may be wondering why the World Wrestling Federation changed its three letter acronym from WWF to WWE.  The short version of the story is, WWF belonged to the World Wildlife Federation. I say this so you know that the purchase of this gift will go to help endangered animals and not Big Show or The Miz

This is a very convenient set of three items for your dog. The first is a portable water dish made of nylon, which is easy to clean and which you can take anywhere, fill with water at a local drinking fountain or rest room, and let your buddy drink to his delight. The second and third are a sturdy collar and leash. All are embroidered with the distinctive WWF Panda logo, letting the world that your buddy cares about his fellow animals around the world who are not lucky enough to have a master who waits on them hand and foot (or paw and paw). The set is yours for a donation of $50.

On the next hot summer day when you’d otherwise be saying “dang, I forgot to pack the water dish”, he or she will be grateful you remembered!

Best charities to donate to for Haiti Earthquake relief

January 16th, 2010 · American Red Cross, AmeriCares, CARE International, Developing Areas, Doctors Without Borders

You’re probably seeing the devastation of the January 12th earthquake in Haiti on your TV screens, and you may be inspired to donate to help those who are suffering.

But while it’s important to give, it’s also important to be very selective in your giving. Unfortunately, for as many wonderful, generous, and giving people there are out there, there are also those who would not hesitate to take advantage of the disaster for their own greedy gains. Just like giving a dollar to a homeless person on the street, it’s gotten to the point where you almost become suspicious of giving to anyone because you don’t know whether your money is going to be used for good or for bad. No doubt you’ll see emails and Facebook entries and Tweets in the coming weeks. Some will be legitimate, others will not be.

There’s a great site called Charity Navigator which is one of the best sites on the Web for reporting on charities. They are an unbiased source of information on charities, and they rate charities by how efficiently they are run. It’s the source I always go to first before I decide whether or not to give.

They have a special page dedicated to Donations for Haiti Earthquake Relief. It includes a list of very important things to keep in mind when planning your Haiti donation, and also have a list of the top-rated, best run charities that have a history of relief work in Haiti (even before the earthquake). There are obviously dozens of other great charities not listed on this page; if you wish to give to one of those charities, just be sure to do your homework first.

Charity Navigator has even gone so far as to identify specific work that some of the charities are doing. This includes the following (click on the link to go directly to the charity’s site).

American Red Cross – Founded in 1881 by Clara Barton, the Red Cross is a premier emergency response organization. Sending tarps, cooking sets, and hygienic supplies for thousands of families and helping with those who need blood. Help is being provided by local citizens who are volunteers, who will be supported by Red Cross Disaster Management personnel.

Americares – A nonprofit disaster relief and humanitarian aid organization which provides immediate response to emergency medical needs, founded in 1982. Sending millions of dollars in medical equipment and supplies including antibiotics, pain relievers, bandages, to survivors with traumatic injuries.

CARE – One of the world’s largest private international humanitarian organizations, committed to helping families in poor communities, originally founded in 1945 to provide relief to survivors of World War II. Have over 100 emergency team members and staff on the ground coordinating with U.N. agencies to distribute food.

Convoy of Hope – Established in 1994, Convoy of Hope was formed to network churches within communities to help people. Charity specializing in feeding the hungry and providing pure drinking water to people in need. Have set up a command center outside Port-au-Prince to distribute food, water and supplies.

Direct Relief International – Since 1948, has been providing medical assistance to improve the quality of life for people affected by poverty, disaster, and civil unrest at home and throughout the world. They’ve set up an emergency airlift providing over $2 million in medical supplies and medicine.

Doctors Without Borders – Created in 1971 to provide medical assistance to people of nations in crisis, based on principles of medical ethics and impartiality. They’re treating people on the ground and are setting up an inflatable hospital.

Food for the Poor – Established in 1982, this is the largest international relief organization in the United States, whose goals are to improve the health, economic, social and spiritual conditions of the men, women and children they serve. They’re an interdenominational ministry, following the principles of Matthew 25:31-46. They’re distributing hundreds of containers of urgently needed medical supplies, rice and canned food.

Partners in Health – Founded in 1987, this is a charity that was first established in Haiti to help provide health care to its poorest people. They’re organizing medical personnel volunteers and gathering supplies.

Save the Children – Founded in 1932, this is the leading independent organization creating lasting change in the lives of children in need. Have been in Haiti for over 25 years and will be providing food, water, shelter and child-friendly space. Save the Children is also providing refuge for other aid workers, as their offices in Haiti did not suffer the structural damage that others did.

Water Missions International – Founded in 1998 after Hurrican Mitch devastated Honduras, this is a Christian nonprofit organization which provides clean, safe water to people in developing countries and disaster areas through a variety of technologies. They have full-time staff in Haiti and are assisting in getting clean water back to its people.

Most of these sites have active blogs and Twitter feeds where you can follow the progress of their work.

Whichever of these charities you decide to give to, do give generously and let’s keep on giving even the celebrities stop talking about it, the pictures stop appearing on TV, and everyone has gone onto the next thing.

Gingerbread from the Heart is a heartwarming story about three children who each build a gingerbread house for their grandmother. Rockport Walking Shoes

January 7th, 2010 · Children's Charities, FogDog

These Rockport Limited Edition DresSports Shoes were specially produced for the New York City Marathon. The Rockport team ran the entire marathon in these shoes. It was a clever way to tout the comfort of their walking shoes, but it wasn’t entirely self-serving; some proceeds from sales of these shoes go to benefit the “Run For Something Better” fund which helps fight childhood obesity by funding free school-based running fitness programs.

Only 500 were made, and supplies are dwindling (in fact, it looks like only size 9 is left at FogDog). Get yours while you can!

Free ticket at Walt Disney World or Disneyland for Volunteering to Charity

January 4th, 2010 · Uncategorized

free day at disney for volunteeringIn 2009, Disney was giving away a free day at Disney Parks to people on their birthday. If you think about it, it was a clever marketing gimmick on Disney’s part. If one family member has a birthday, everyone else in the family would tag along and of course pay for their admission.

In 2010, Disney is being much more altruistic. With their “Give a Day, Get a Day” program, you can sign up for a volunteer project at a participating organization. Volunteer for a day, and Disney will send you a voucher for a Disney theme park ticket once they’ve verified that you’ve completed the service.

Note that you must register through Disney’s site and opportunities are limited, so sign up quickly. Best thing about it is that you can sign up to eight people, so you can do volunteer work together as a family, and then enjoy Disney World or Disneyland together afterwards.

Great move by Disney to get help for needy causes at a time when they need it most. For more details, see here:

Charity Calendars 2010

January 1st, 2010 · Calendars.Com, Conservation

Happy New Year 2010! What, you haven’t gotten a wall calendar yet? Never fear, Calendars.Com has a bunch of great calendars to select from where a portion of proceeds goes to a worthy cause.

Charity calendars are always great, because not only are calendars something you need plenty of around the house and around the office, they’re also a way to give to a charity in need, and also to remind yourself, your family members, and others who see the calendar of the important cause they’re supporting (and in turn, support it themselves).

No matter what cause you support, chances are there’s a charity calendar you can buy to help it. Here’s just a sampling:

sierra club charity calendar1. Sierra Club Wall Calendar: The Sierra Club calendar is one of the quintessential calendars to get every year. It’s always one of the most popular charity calendars available because of the Sierra Club’s reknowned photography, some of the most beautiful nature imagery you’ll see anywhere. This year’s calendar is no different, with a different exquisite image of a North American landscape each month. Part of the proceeds of each purchase goes to the Sierra Club’s conservation efforts.

national geographic calendar2. National Geographic Pandas Wall Calendar: National Geographic photographers, of course, are among the best in the world at capturing wildlife. This year, they have a series of calendars focusing on a whole range of animals. My personal favorite is this collection of Giant Panda photos, taken in the mountains of China. The photos are brilliant, and the calendar is printed with soy ink on FSC-certified paper. Proceeds go to help National Geographic’s research and conservation projects.

military charity calendar

3. American Heroes Wall Calendar: This is a classy and respectful calendar focusing on the brave men and women serving in the military. It features photos of soldiers of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines, showing them at their finest. A portion of proceeds from this calendar will benefit the Fisher House Foundation, which provides military families with homes near military bases and VA hospitals so loved ones can stay together.

pin up calendar

4. Camouflage Pin-Up Wall Calendar: No charity calendar collection is complete without the requisite pin-up calendar. This one features photographs of 12 beautiful models in classic poses similar to the famous pin-up girls from the 40’s and 50’s. The outfits are painted onto the models using body paint. 50% of the proceeds of sales from this calendar go to help the Warrior Foundation, helping wounded veterans and their familes.

firefighter calendar for charity5. New York City Firefighters Wall Calendar: In the interest of equal time, while the previous calendar featured pictures that could be displayed and appreciated in all-male environments, this calendar can certainly be displayed and appreciated in all-female environments. It features actual firefighters from New York City and Westchester County. Some of the proceeds from this one will be donated to The Staten Island University Hospital Burn Center.

2010 charity calendar

6. Leafprints Plant-A-Tree Wall Calendar: For each Plant-A-Tree calendar sold, American Forests will be able to plant a tree to help reforest America, thanks to Avalanche Publishing donating part of the proceeds from this calendar. The calendar, of course, is printed on recycled paper which is 30% post-consumer waste paper, printed in the U.S.A. using soy-based ink,

2010 charity baby animals calendar7. Baby Animals WWF Engagement Calendar: Back to family-friendly fare, this adorable collection of 26 full-color photos of baby animals is sure to bring a smile each day you look at them. The calendar comes complete with space to write your notes for each day, a list of World Time Zones, International Telephone dialing codes, and something I use a lot, weights and measures conversion. Proceeds will go towards a donation of $90,000.

Keep visiting Calendars.Com for more 2010 calendars that donate to charity.

Free Christmas E-Cards where $1 goes to support art in schools

December 23rd, 2009 · Arts, Children's Charities

Need to send a quick Christmas e-card, and tired of sending and receiving the same free e-card from Hallmark or Blue Mountain for the umpteenth-and-a-half time? Here are some truly unique Christmas e-cards which help a great cause: support for the arts in schools.

It’s no secret that in these tough economic times, often the first casualties within schools are arts programs. Playing an instrument is a wonderful way to teach kids things that can’t be taught in a classroom, things like teamwork and creativity, the value of art, and a feeling of self-esteem and accomplishment.

This is what makes initiatives like Fidelity Futurestage so important. This is a charitable program run by Fidelity which helps bring arts education to underprivileged middle and high school kids. The program funds in-school classes, helps expose the kids to professional artists, theater productions, concert performances, and students’ own performances.

These e-cards are simple holiday cards but what’s neat about them when your recipient opens them, they’ll hear classical music pieces from the Boston Pops, Chicago Symphony, Houston Symphony, LA Philharmonic, or the North Carolina Symphony. Better still, for each card you send, Fidelity will donate $1 to needy schools.
