Knitting for a good cause

January 2nd, 2008 · Amazon

Knitting for Peace

I was trying to figure out which gift would make a good item to start out the New Year. This one jumped out at me, just because it’s such a great idea.

There’s something I noticed lately. Knitting is “in” again. It’s not just for grammas anymore. My sister, who’s a professional veterinarian and graduated at the top of her class at Princeton, loves to knit. So does the young lady whom I manage at work, who happens to be one of the smartest computer programmers I know. And walking through the streets of New York, I see professional women with their briefcases on one hand and their knitting bags on the other, just knitting once and purling twice away.

Knitting for Peace is a great book that talks about a 200 year-old tradition that is coming back in vogue: “charity knitting”, where communities would get together and knit for those in need. It’s a tradition that dates back to Martha Washington, who organized knitting efforts for soldiers during the Revolutionary War.

Today, there are initiatives to knit blankets for refugees, mittens for the homeless, socks for the troops, and even caps for premature AIDS babies. This book highlights 28 of these efforts, and even comes with a few sample patterns that can be used to knit charity projects of your own.

Aside from being a great way to spur on volunteer efforts, a portion of proceeds from the sale of this book are donated to charity.

Give a Teddy Bear to a Child with Cancer

December 31st, 2007 · American Cancer Society, Cancer, Children's Charities

Teddy Bear for Children with Cancer United Airlines has teamed up with the American Cancer Society to do something pretty cool.

For every $50 that you donate to the American Cancer Society between now and January 31, 2008 (the Web site says December 31, but you have all of January to do it), you’ll not only be helping the ACS in its fight against cancer, you’ll put the cute little 17″ Gund teddy bear in the hands of a child fighting cancer. In February 2008, bears will be distributed in at least 40 hospitals across the country. With a donation of $250, they’ll also send a complimentary bear to your house (supplies are limited).

If you happen to have United Mileage Plus miles, you can donate those as well to help transport children with cancer and their families to receive treatment they need.

For more details, see http://www.ual.com/bearhug.

Red Cross Emergency Hand-Crank Radio

December 29th, 2007 · Amazon, American Red Cross

Red Cross Emergency Radio

This Red Cross Emergency Radio makes a great gift for yourself or for anyone who might find themselves in a hurricane, tornado, thunderstorm, flood, or other situation where electricity is not available.

It contains an AM/FM radio, as well as NOAA weather radio and TV bands. In addition, it contains an LED flashlight (bright bulb that doesn’t burn out), a loud siren (get one for the car and one for the house), and even a cell phone charger with several cell phone adapters.

Best thing about it is that it includes a hand-crank that charges the built-in rechargable battery. So even when the lights go out, just turn the crank for a few minutes, and you’ve got access to the radio, siren, and light.

For each radio purchased, the manufacturer will donate to the American Red Cross. So your purchase will not only help you but others as well in need.

And best thing about it–as always, 10% of every purchase goes to a charity you choose! (You can choose from an extensive list of charities as you add the item to your shopping cart).

Let them know you remember–even if you didn’t! 🙂

The OLIVER Book: Stunning Nature Photography

December 15th, 2007 · Arts, Children's Charities, Conservation, DreamYard, The Nature Conservancy, Uncommon Goods

Photographs of J. Oliver LewisThe photos you see to the left were taken by J. Oliver Lewis, an incredible nature and adventure photographer. His story is at the same time heartbreaking and inspiring.

Oliver died in 1998 at age 26, while kayaking and working in Ecuador. But even at such a young age, he had already produced an incredible collection of nature photography that shows his artistry and his love of the natural world. He was taken from the world at much too young an age.

Lewis’s family took the last 18 months of his photographs and compiled them into this book
icon as a celebration of his life and his vision. The images are a beautiful collection of seascapes, forests, close-up photography of nature, mountain grandeur, deserts, sunsets, and adventure photography.

All the profits from the book will go to charity, including The Nature Conservancy and DreamYard/DreamYard LA, an innovative arts-in-education organization.
