Save the Coral Reefs with a donation to The Nature Conservancy

November 4th, 2008 · Conservation, The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy is a charity that has gotten among the highest ratings from CharityNavigator.

Since 1951, their mission has been to protect land and water around the world in scientific, non-confrontational, and pragmatic ways. They’ve preserved land in all 50 states and over 30 countries.

A great gift you can give from their site to the nature lover in your life is their Rescue The Reef package. Coral reefs are among the world’s most beautiful natural wonders, and home to countless species of plants and animals, but through a combination of natural and man-made influences, they are quickly dying. Some say that up to 70% of the world’s reefs may be dead in the next 40 years. Your donation will go to an important project designing and creating protected networks in the Asia-Pacific region, known as the Coral Triangle.

Your recipient will get a gift card, certificate, colorful factsheet, and a year subscription to the Nature Conservancy magazine.

Layered beer spoon to make black and tan beer

November 1st, 2008 · Amazon, Animal Causes

tool to make layered beerLayered beer, also known as black and tan beer or half-and-half beer, is a unique way to serve beer. You basically “layer” different colored beers (specifically, a pale ale or lager and a dark beer like a stout or porter) on top of each other, yielding a beautifully presented drink.

This clever little gadget does three things. First, it fits perfectly over a pint glass and.transforms the stream into tiny drops that make layering a snap.

Second, the tool doubles as a handy bottle opener.

Third, the clever creators of this tool fashioned it after an alligator snapping turtle, which had the perfect shell shape, claws and snappers for the job. As a tribute to this endangered species, a portion of proceeds will be donated to the Lagerhead Foundation, an organization dedicated to turtle habitat conservation and restoration projects. The tool even comes with 10 easy-to-follow recipes for creating your own drinks.

Pet Drinking Fountain that Benefits Breast Cancer Research

October 29th, 2008 · Amazon, Breast Cancer

Each year around this time, a lot of companies come up with the darndest ideas for pink products to benefit breast cancer awareness and research. This certainly falls amongst the oddest, and yet the most useful and innovative. It’s a drinking fountain for cats. If you’ve had a cat, you know their drinking bowl can get filled with gunk very quickly. Of course, kitty won’t drink gunky water, and so he or she ends up going to a source for fresh water, like the kitchen sink or the toilet. This unit filters and aerates water, and keeps it continually moving, and cats love running water. This is not just a silly little luxury for cats–a veterinarian invented the fountain for one important reason. Many cats do not drink the amount of water they should. This fountain encourages proper hydration in healthy cats, and is especially helpful for cats with a risk of kidney or urinary tract disease. The fountain holds six cups of water, a charcoal filter absorbs tastes and odors, and the falling stream adds oxygen and is more appealing to cats. It doesn’t require connection to a water line, and keeps cats from jumping into the kitchen sink or the toilet! And yes, it’s pink and a portion of proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
